How Much Detergent Should I Use?
If you are wondering – how much detergent should I use in a laundromat washer – we have the answers for you. Laundromat washers and dryers are much larger than a typical homestyle washer so you need to know how much detergent to use. Too much detergent can actually leave your clothes dirty, and make them dingy over time.

Amount of Chemicals By Washer Size
Laundry detergent quantities are super important for several reasons. Too much detergent can build up on your clothes, causing fires in high-heat dryers, and, as stated above, they can also leave your clothes dirty and dingy.
Since laundromats have different sizes of washers, be sure to choose the size that is right for your laundry. This is very important because using a washer that’s too large, or too small won’t clean your clothes as well.
Also, keep in mind that 1 laundry basket weighs between 10-18 pounds. Therefore if you are going to do one basket of laundry, use the 20lb washer. Since we like to sort by colors and materials, you may use several 20lb machines to get all of your laundry finished.
- 20 lb Washer = 1/4 Cup of Detergent
- 40 lb Washer = 1/2 Cup of Detergent
- 60 lb Washer = 3/4 Cup of Detergent
- 80 lb Washer = 1 Cup of Detergent
So while the above quantities apply to detergent, you can also use the same measurements for chlorine & non-chlorine bleach, and fabric softener.
Where Do I Put the Chemicals
A laundromat washer will most likely have a compartment specifically for each chemical. It’s important to use these compartments correctly. However, pods, scent beads, and powdered detergent all go inside the washer drum.
If you don’t want to have the last person’s bleach ruin your laundry, we recommend that you add a cup of water to the bleach compartment and run a rinse cycle before you add your dark and colored laundry.
